  • American Society of Gene Therapy - ASGT is the largest medical professional organization representing researchers and scientists dedicated to discovering new gene therapies. The Society was established in 1996 and has already grown to almost 3,000 members. ASGT is committed to promoting and fostering the exchange and dissemination of information and ideas related to gene therapy, encouraging the general field of research involving gene therapy and promoting professional and public education in all areas of gene therapy. ASGT has an official journal, Molecular Therapy, which publishes scientific meritorious papers in the areas of gene transfer, gene regulation, gene discovery, cell therapy, experimental models, correction of genetic and acquired diseases, and clinical trials. In addition, Molecular Therapy publishes timely reviews, commentaries, and scientific correspondence. ASGT holds an annual meeting each year, featuring scientific symposia, workshops, oral abstract presentations, exhibits and poster sessions. For more information on future annual meetings, go to www.asgt.org.

  • Japanese Society for Molecular Imaging - On January 28, 2006, a group of Japanese molecular imaging scientists gathered to begin formation of the Japanese Society for Molecular Imaging (JSMI). The Society will hold its first, organizational meeting at Kyoto University, on May 23-24, 2006. For more information in Japanese, select the homepage link above; for information in English, select: www.molecularimaging.jp/JSMI/English.html.

  • Medical Imaging, "The Picture of Value" - The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) recently launched a new web site on Medical Imaging, "The Picture of Value". The site portrays the benefits of medical imaging, including cost savings and lives extended at a time when journalists and third party payers are focused on imaging as a cost driver from over utilization and high costs of some procedures. The site, therefore, is intended to introduce some balance into the discussion of cost.

  • Society for Whole Body Autoradiography - The Society for Whole Body Autoradiography (SWBA) is a non-profit organizaton of pharmaceutical scientists dedicated to development and use of autoradiographic techniques to study the distribution of radiolabeled compounds in various tissues of animals in whole body and individual tissue preparations. The society was formed in 1994, when the first meeting was held in Louisville, KY. The SWBA membership is composed of international scientists in academia and industry..

  • Society of Non-Invasive Imaging in Drug Development - The Society of Nuclear Imaging in Drug Development (SNIDD) is an all volunteer, educational organization which has the goal of increasing the appropriate use of non-invasive, imaging technology as tools in drug research and development. We provide opportunities for scientists from the drug industry and from academic research centers to learn more about the potential of non-invasive imaging technology for providing valuable information that can increase the efficiency of new pharmaceutical research and development. We hope, by the efforts of SNIDD and similar organizations, that this technology will become more widely used since it has the potential of increasing the efficiency of drug discovery and development programs by reducing both the overall time required and the cost of these programs. We expect to hold biennial symposia on this subject, publish a biannual newsletter and continue to provide support for presentations at appropriate national and international meetings.

  • The Biophysical Society - Founded in 1957, at the First National Biophysics Conference, the Biophysical Society has become the world's largest membership organization for biophysicists. A dynamic, growing organization of over 7,000 scientists, our members represent a wide range of research areas, in particular, scientists who work on the physical-chemical basis of biological structure. The Society publishes the top-rated, peer-reviewed Biophysical Journal which covers a broad range of areas including: bioenergetics, biophysical theory/modeling, cell biophysics, channels/receptors/transporters, electrophysiology, membranes, muscle and contractility, nucleic acids, photobiophysics, proteins, spectroscopy (imaging), and supramolecular assemblies. The Society's 48th Annual Meeting will be held February 14-18, 2004 in Baltimore, Maryland. Please visit www.biophysics.org to learn more about the Biophysical Soceity and the many benefits of membership.
