Elected to Receive Molecular Imaging Achievement Award:

Britton Chance, Ph.D., Sc.D. (Cantab.), M.D. (Hon)
University of Pennsylvania and the National University of Singapore

Professor Britton Chance, a biochemist and biophysicist, is the pioneer of noninvasive detection of molecular redox conditions using optical fluoresence techniques. He invented the dual-wavelength spectrophotometer that allowed studies of the oxidative phosphorylation biochemistry particularly relative to mitochondrial function. His career has been dedicated to teaching and innovations ranging from microwave (World War II radar) to near infrared and optical photon frequencies and from molecules to human subjects (e.g. breast cancer). The concept of molecular beacons is attributed to Dr. Chance.
